Ecosante expands to include the Fertile Earth Worm Farm & Feed Company!

Teaming up with our non-profit arm, the Fertile Earth Foundation, Ecosante is proud to announce that we have expanded our services to include a composting worm farm in Homestead, Florida! The purpose of this venture is to help South Florida turn "waste" into resources. Food scraps, animal manure, soiled cardboard and paper once destined for the landfill now have the opportunity to embark on a new life. Composting earthworms convert these items into some of the most nutrient rich, organic fertilizers known to man - worm castings. A tea, aptly called worm tea, is also produced from the castings that is not only a liquid fertilizer but a pest repellant which is effective on a broad range of pests including aphids, mealy bugs, whitefly, scale and more.

Our vision also entails:

* helping farmers and nurseries use more 'earth-friendly' methods

* supporting our local farmers by connecting them directly with local restaurants and hotels, thus helping keep food local, reducing our carbon footprint and keeping more money in our community

* helping food establishments donate excess food to humans and animals, thus lowering waste bills while helping the local community

Ecosante is in charge of the manufacturing of castings and tea while Fertile Earth is handling the education, research, sales and marketing. Not only is turning kitchen scraps and landscaping debris into compost good for the environment, it's good for the wallet. Worm gardens and in-vessel technology do not take up much space, and thus can be located on-site, with the by-products used to offset chemical fertilizer, pesticide and insecticide usage. Coupled with a reduction in waste hauling fees, composting is a simple, yet cost effective solution.

US Moves Towards Energy Star Benchmarking

As of 2010, California, New York and Washington, DC require non-residential commercial buildings to benchmark their energy efficiency using the EPA's Energy Star Portfolio Manager. A useful tool, Portfolio Manager ranks comparable buildings on a scale of 1 to 100, 100 representing the highest percentile of energy efficiency. Buildings scoring a 75 or higher are eligible for an Energy Star label which can be used to market the building to potential buyers, leasees and guests. Hotels are at a particular advantage as Travelocity and Orbitz's green booking engines allow for easy identification of Energy Star labeled properties. And with Travelocity's green hotels booking 65% more than non-green counterparts, it's an advantage not to be missed.
